Myrtle Lake Baptist Church offers Upward Soccer

by John Berti, Publicity and Event Preparation Manager

Land O Lakes, FL – Myrtle Lake Baptist Church is now accepting registration for its Upward Soccer leagues: a fun and exciting sports league for boys and girls (k5- through sixth grade). It is the church's third year offering such a program.

Unlike traditional sports programs, Upward programs are structured so children participate in practices and games play without league standings. Characteristics such as sportsmanship, kindness and character are valued as winning qualities. Coaches primarily focus on ministering to children and their famili es. Teams are arranged in a substitution system where all players are allowed equal playing time and equal opportunity for improvement.

The eight-game season will open Saturday, September 18, 2010 and run through Saturday, November 8, 2010. Players will also have a weekly one hour practice during the week. All games and practices will be held on the Myrtle Lake Baptist Church campus located at 2017 Reigler Rd., Land O Lakes, FL near the intersection of SR 54 and Collier Parkway.

Player evaluations will be held two different Saturdays: August 21, 2010 @ 2:30 PM and August 28, 2010 @ 10:00 AM. Registration forms may be downloaded at www.myrtlelake.org. For more information, call League Director, Curt Hinson @ 813-376-4182 or League Commissioner, Allan Gazaway @ 813-995-2577.

Support The Troops Inc. seeks donations

Support The Troops Inc., located at 29807 SR 54 in Wesley Chapel, is collecting one-gallon clear plastic bags filled with candy, snacks, food, notes or anything nonperishable and non-liquid. Last year, Support The Troops was able  to ship 135,000 bags to 19 bases and two ships in forward deployed areas. The overwhelming response from the chaplains was, “that was the best Christmas they had ever had when they were deployed for both themselves and our troops,” according to Bob Williams, founder of Support The Troops. If you are involved in any size group, such as Sunday school classes, adult groups, civic organizations, or any business and would like to help with this project, it would be greatly appreciated, Williams said. Toiletry items should be bagged separately from food items. You can also include email addresses and return addresses of adults in the bags so that you may receive responses from the troops you have helped. For more information, call Williams at (800) 367-3591, (813) 991-9400 or (813) 334-1087.  Williams is available to speak to any group interested in participating.
