White Cane Awareness DAy

Oct 11, 2017 - 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. - Posted in Special Event
Everyone is invited to the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired White Cane Awareness Day. Lighthouse staff, clients, and volunteers will be raising awareness about pedestrian safety and the white cane law. Visually impaired staff and clients will take blindfolded members of the public across the street to simulate the experience of vision impairment. White Cane Awareness Day has been celebrated since 1964 when a joint resolution of Congress was signed into law. The purpose of the day is to increase the public’s knowledge about the white cane—the device used by people with visual impairments to help them travel safely and live independently. The white cane is the universal symbol for blindness and vision impairment.
