Phoneography Competition sponsored by Rasmussen College at the Suncoast Arts Fest 2014

Phoneography Competition sponsored by Rasmussen College, was a competition open to anyone who can take a picture on their phone. Tony Masella won the competition with his Samsung Galaxy Note II taking a picture of Tampa Artist Sara May, a Multiple Sclerosis Mouth Artist. Masella, Owner of the Award winning Community Website, OurtownFLA.com was won a new Apple iPad Mini. Check out Sara's Artwork: HERE
The Suncoast Arts Fest took place at The Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel in mid-January. For the past nine years, the Suncoast Arts Fest (SAF) has celebrated the fine artist and craftsman along with great music and quality food. About 130 artists attended the two-day event, which included a 1-mile Family Fun Run for the Arts and a pancake breakfast for participants.

They also added something new. It was called the Phoneography contest, and featured only photos taken with a cell photo and emailed in to volunteers on the Saturday of the show. Several photos placed in the winners and honorable mention categories, but it was the first place winner, Tony Masella, who won an iPad mini for his efforts. Three judges from Rasmussen College’s Land O’Lakes branch made the selections. Prior to the photo shoot, each registrant was also provided a short primer about how to take better smartphone photos. The college was the sponsor of this contest and staffed the registration tent, collected the emailed photos and sent them to a Dropbox for sharing. There were a total of 21 entries and only one photo per person could be entered. SAF organizers plan to use these photos to promote next year’s show.

The two-day festival is presented by the Fine Arts of the Suncoast, Inc., a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization with proceeds benefitting “Arts for Kids” in Pasco County. Profits from the arts fest are awarded to teacher who apply through a grant program managed by Fine Arts of the Suncoast where teachers apply via their website www.suncoastartsfest.com <http://www.suncoastartsfest.com> .

“Each year the funds raised from this event go toward helping the advancement of the visual and performing art needs of kids in Pasco County schools, both public and private. Our goal is to raise money for grants. We’ve built a website that serves as a streamlined resource for youth striving to pursue a career in the arts fields,” explains Pam Marron, co-director of the festival.

#8 - Winner! (woman painting with brush in mouth). The judges liked the strong composition, the different perspective (from within the booth, looking out), and the sensitivity in the eye contact and gestures of the people looking on. The photograph said 'art show' as well as telling a strong story about spirit over adversity and the art in all of us. Photo by Anthony Masella

#18 - second place (dog-friendly art show). The judges thought it was a unique perspective… down low, rather than shot from eye-level, with strong composition, clean background, and intriguing expression from the dog. The pottery in the shot was well balanced from foreground to background. Was probably cropped to eliminate people at the top, which gave the judges some sense that the photographer clearly understands composition. Photo by Deborah Gillars

#19 as third place (family walking). The judges were reminded of the Beatles' Abby Road album. Aside from the nice rhythm of the walking, the placement of the people with artwork interspersed between them was good. Judges were split on whether the man to the far right added or subtracted from the composition. Photo by Danny Sandoval
