The Altruism Foundation Inc www.thealtruismfoundation.com which is based in Lutz hosted an event on July 23 at the Lutz Nature Park in honor of James David Birk, a longtime Lutz resident who would have celebrated his 23rd birthday on July 22. James celebrated Thanksgiving 2009 with his family by playing Cornhole, a favorite family pastime before leaving Hillsborough River State Park to watch football with a friend. He lost control of his vehicle just moments before returning to the park and later passed away due to internal injuries.

This year, his family collaborated with The Altruism Foundation to hold an event to hold a fundraiser in his memory. A Cornhole Tournament was decided upon with the proceeds being used to provide future scholarships to selected students from Freedom High School where James attended high school. A portion of the funds will also be designated to help Wesley Chapel resident and USF student Wade Thorson with his college expenses while he is being treated for colon cancer.

The "Boca Boys" team of Blake Hutchinson and Ben Venyard took first place in the tournament competing against 17 other teams in a double elimination event. There were also various local business vendors, food & refreshments and live music provided by the band JADED who donated their time to play for the cause. Young musician James Williams also played for attendees and autographed his debut CD “A Moment with the Classics”. James will donate a portion of his sales to the cause, call 813.322.3892 for more info.

Gina Betz of Thirty-One Gifts (mythirtyone.comGBetz) showed her line of custom purses for sale and donated a portion of her sales to the cause. Over 40 Chance drawing prizes were awarded to attendees donated by area businesses. The event raised over $1000 and will become an annual event in the area. James' father, Tim Adamo, stands next to the commemorative memorial plaque that was unveiled shortly after the event and was placed behind home plate on the Lutz Little League field dedicated to James last winter.Photos of this event by Anthony V.
