Congressman Gus Bilirakis Honored with the Governor Martinez Good Government Award at Hillsborough County Republican Party Lincoln Gala which featured Dr. Ben Carson, HUD Secretary

Congressman Gus Bilirakis Honored with the Governor Bob Martinez Good Government Award at the Hillsborough County Republican Party Lincoln Gala on June 9, 2017 which featured Dr. Ben Carson, M.D.

The Governor Bob Martinez Good Government Award is about far more than creating or supporting legislation. Criteria include that the legislation be purpose driven; that the elected official be accessible to constituents; maintain the posture of a statesman; and, support the Republican Party and platform with courage and integrity - all traits inherent in the leadership and service of Governor Bob Martinez. Hillsborough REC proudly presented the annual award to Congressman Bilirakis who represents Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas citizens.

Traits which made Congressman Gus Bilirakis the ideal recipient of the award include his humility as a public servant who frequently meets with constituents and is sensitive to their struggles and concerns; his leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives; and, his reputation as a statesman who adheres to our Constitution . Because of his professional demeanor and the fact that he is always well educated about issues and recommends innovative solutions, Congressman Bilirakis has the ear of his colleagues and is adept at winning their support.

Dr. Ben Carson, M.D. was the Lincoln 2017 Gala “Inspiring Our Nation” keynote speaker. A renowned life saving surgeon, an author, a mentor, and the newly appointed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Carson shared his vision for breaking the cycle of poverty through education, health and infrastructure. Dr. Carson also stressed the need for all people to unify, understand and embrace our Constitution.

Hillsborough REC Chair, Deborah Tamargo, welcomed Dr. and Mrs. Carson pointing to the parallel path which led to the success of President Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Ben Carson - reading. Success inspired by books led Dr. Carson and Mrs. Carson to sponsor 165 reading rooms and gift over 7,300 scholarships to enable deserving disadvantaged students to learn and earn.

Deputy Majority Whip Congressman Dennis Ross introduced Dr. Carson to the 425 guests. Congressman Ross spoke about Dr. Carson’s struggles, sacrifice and achievements. Additionally, Congressman Ross spoke to the deep understanding Dr. Carson exhibits and innovative solutions he’s bringing to inner city crime and poverty, as well as Dr. Carson’s passion to improve the lives of all who have been impacted by their circumstance.

Serving as Master of Ceremonies was Niger Innis. Niger Innis is a National columnist, television and radio commentator.

Recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award was Lt. Colonel U.S. Marines retired Steve Emerson. Recipients of the Benefactor Award were Art and Mary Wood.

Hillsborough REC is grateful for TPepin and Florida Speaker of the House Richard Corcoran for their support of Lincoln 2017, and look forward to joint venturing an event for the benefit of Hillsborough and Pasco, as we continue to work together to Improve the Lives of All People.
