Vice President Joe Biden visits Oakstead Elementary School in Land O’Lakes

Tuesday, Oct 04, 2011 | On Target Page: Land O'Lakes, Democratic Party Events

The Vice President visited Oakstead Elementary School in Land O’Lakes and told the crowd of about 150 that the country can't afford to keep losing teachers, and President Barack Obama's jobs bill will keep more of them in the classrooms. He also claimed that the Jobs Act would also result in upgrading one-third of all schools across the country. Vice President Joe Biden says Congress must pass the president's American Jobs Act to stop the widespread teacher layoffs made necessary by local budget shortfalls.

Vice President Biden attended a fifth-grade classroom and talked to kids on the playground and as a Grandfather himself said the kids were adorable. “I could just eat them!” he said before delivering a half-hour speech in the Schools library.

Vice President Biden noted that the Pasco County school district eliminated 513 positions for the current school year, including eight teachers at Oakstead Elementary. Many wondered why, in a county with so much unemployment, the Vice President chose a school that although lost eight positions, all eight were offered employment elsewhere in the District. Most of the positions that were lost resulted in no job loss because of attrition. The Vice President was not made available to the press for questions.
