At Habitat for Humanity, sweat equity is a new homeowner investing in their home or one for another family.
It's not a form of payment, but an opportunity to work alongside volunteers who give their time to bring to life a family's dream of owning a home. Sweat equity is not a simple programmatic requirement. Rather, sweat equity is an exciting cornerstone to the Habitat ministry, designed to meet important objectives: partnership, pride in homeownership, and development of skills and knowledge. Applicants learn about the construction and maintenance issues they will face after occupancy. We would like applicants to experience the pride of homeownership and accomplishment of their goals. We hope that the hours spent working on sweat equity will be both enjoyable and rewarding and that the partnership we form will continue long after the homebuyer moves in. Habitat families can accept donated sweat equity hours from friends and family who volunteer on a Habitat home. Families with only one adult must personally complete at least 200 sweat equity hours and can have up to 200 sweat equity hours donated. Families with two or more adults must personally complete 300 sweat equity hours and can have up to 100 sweat equity hours donated.
Mike and Charlotte Arnold's church family came by on March 13th to work on their home in Dade City. Habitat families appreciate volunteers like those from Calvary Assembly Church, who not only help with the actual work of building but also help with their sweat equity hours.
Consider a Team Building Day
Habitat for Humanity of East and Central Pasco County welcomes local businesses, civic clubs and churches to volunteer at a Habitat jobsite. In addition to building stronger teams, volunteering for Habitat provides a unique way to give back to your community. A Team Build engages co-workers and friends in a way that encourage stronger relationships, all while learning new skills.
Habitat provides all the tools, building materials, and training for your Team Build; no construction experience is needed. Teams are encouraged to contribute a tax-deductible donation in conjunction with their build day.
Some of the benefits of a Team Building volunteer day include:
• helping employees, congregations or club members to get to know one another better
• Allows volunteers to experience first-hand giving back to the community and helping others, especially when working side by side with the Habitat partner family.
• Reinforces how important effective communication is
• Creates unity among members of your team
• Reinforces the fact that a team of individuals can accomplish more working together than an individual working alone
