The Roller Derby Christmas Story

On December 4, 2011 ourtownfla.com attended the Roller Derby Christmas Story with teams The Ralphies vs The Red Ryders. The event was held at Astro Skate located at 10001 66th street north Pinellas Park. Florida. From what we learned from the sport it’s first something the whole family can enjoy from a new men’s league that is based out of the Tampa Florida area. Threw our research we found that this is a sport that has taken not just Florida but around the world itself with multiple teams in each area. Many think it as of the beginning days where it was on TV and scripted but today it is a sport that many play. It isn’t scripted or fake those are real hits and people you see everyday at work.

During this event toys were collected for the children of Ronald McDonald House and their families. This is just one of the many charity events the teams like to hold as if it's more of a
Derby bout for a cause. For most of the players if not all of them they all hold a special part in their hearts to carry out a cause to help people and support organizations. As we were able to talk with some of the players and try to get the feeling of what it's like to be bumped by one of the other players I had to stop and take a hit for myself, these ladies land a hell of a hip check... Sitting on the rink floor taking pictures of the match was awesome to feel and watch as they skate past you.

I watched each player on how they worked together as a team and how they pulled their jammers threw the crowd of blockers and wanted to strap on a pair of skates and join in. Maybe I should as there is now a means team in
Tampa, hmmm ourtownfla.com on skates... Might be fun and a great idea and maybe a nice helmet cam to capture the feeling of being with the team. As we will be attending much more of these family events we hope to give everyone the same experience as we feel on the side lines. Feel free to come to a bout and bring the family as with the junior leagues are formed and always looking for more members it will be something you wont forget and wont want to leave.

How the game work and the positions:

Bout: it is composed of two periods of 30 minutes of play. A period is divided into multiple jams, which are races between the two teams to score points. There is no limit to the number of jams allowed in each period. A jam may last up to two minutes. Jams end on the 4th whistle of the jam-ending signal. There are 30 seconds between jams. The team with the most points at the end wins the game.

Jammer: Line up at the rear of the pack. The Jammer’s role is to make his/her way through the pack, lap of pack, and pass through the pack as many times as she chooses in a jam to score points for his/her team. A Jammer may pass his/her position of jammer to their team’s pivot. Jammers wear a helmet cover with a star on each side.

Pivot: Is a special subset of blocker with the extra ability of receiving a star pass. Prior to the start of a jam, pivots line up at the front of the pack. In certain circumstances, a pivot makes take over the position of jammer for their team. Pivots wear a striped helmet cover.

Blocker: Line up behind the pivots and ahead of the jammers. They play a key role in determining the position of the pack and keeping the pack formed. Blockers play a defensive role for their teams. They attempted to hinder the progress of the opposing team’s jammer and defend their team’s jammer from the defensive maneuvers on trips through the pack. Blockers never score.

They are still the same family of skaters & officials from PCRG and have an entire season planned out for next year! At the Dec. 4th bout, they formed their 2 home teams that will play against each other during the year! Their names are: Hot Rod Hotties & Cat O StrophiX.... These teams will battle it out to see who will be the champion at the end of the year! They also are planning at least one FUN exhibition bout.
