Saturday, Feb 05, 2011 | On Target Page:

Former New York police officer Daniel Rodriguez performed at the Groves Golf and Country Club with his wife, New Zealand soprano Marla Kavanaugh, and jazz pianist Jesse Lynch. Rodriguez, an American operatic tenor from New York City became known as "The Singing Policeman" in his former work with the New York City Police Department, due to his role as one of the department's designated National Anthem singers. In the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, he received a lot of attention with his singing of "God Bless America", which he sang at the memorial events for the fallen. This led to an offer of formal training from Placido Domingo. He has now recorded several albums, appeared in opera and in symphony concerts, and performs in support of numerous charities. They finished their 107 US City Tour to entertain at the Groves because his Mother lives there and the community has adopted him as their own. "It was a great show and capacity crowds at both performances enjoyed them immensely" said Groves event Coordinator Donna Hartwick. Rodriguez performed last month with his family in Greymouth, New Zealand for families of the 29 miners killed in underground explosions this past November.
