Land O'Lakes High School Falls to Sunlake High School in Overtime
Sometimes, four quarters isn’t enough.
For a rivalry this big, this personal, of course, overtime was the answer. So, in arguably one of the best games in Pasco County in years, it was the crosstown matchup that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the end.
Sunlake edged Land O’ Lakes 28-21 in overtime, beating the Gators for the third straight year and keeping the Seahawks’ postseason hopes alive.
“Beating the rival is everything,†Sunlake linebacker Ben Wood said. “Land O’ Lakes started talking back in June during 7-on-7 (football) that they would beat us, and coach (Bill Browning) just told us to keep that in our minds. We’ve been waiting a long time for tonight.â€
Defense leads Gators past Hudson HS at Land O'Lakes HS in Football Action
The Land O’ Lakes defense pitched its second shutout of the season and kicker Andy Dowler hit a career-high three field goals as the Gators downed Hudson 16-0 on Friday evening at John Benedetto Stadium. With the win, the Gators improve to 6-0 for the first time since 2009. “We’ll take a win any way we can get it, even if we’re not going to score on offense,†Gators coach Brian Wachtel said. “We’ve got some things to work out before next week, that’s for sure.†On Friday, Land O’ Lakes faces crosstown and Class 6A-District 6 foe Sunlake (6-1) in a pivotal game that will make or break their seasons.

It looked like a trap game heading into next week’s matchup against neighborhood rival Land O’ Lakes, but Sunlake was able to turn a first-half defensive battle into a rout during the final two quarters.
Sunlake utilized its strong offensive line and was able to muscle 171 yards rushing, 134 coming from running back Nathan Johnson, in a shutout win at Seahawk Stadium.
